I’ve seen 3 different dentists for stains in my teeth. The stains are from strong antibiotics that I was given while I was in the hospital 2 years ago. The treating doctor told me to expect the stains but I had no idea they would be this bad or that they would last this long. The good news is that although the infection I had wasn’t clearly identified, it seems to be under control. Now I have my teeth to deal with. Nothing I’ve tried at home works at all. One of the dentists I saw immediately admitted that he couldn’t do anything with my teeth. The other 2 dentists tried teeth whitening. One dentist even tried a brand that is said to get the toughest stains from medication out of your teeth but I see no change at all. I am not sure if this is an issue of lack of experience or the type of bleaching treatment uses. Now I am just interested in finding the best dentist to get the stains out of my teeth. The problem is that I don’t know how to find that dentist or dentists. I am sure that more than one person knows how to get my teeth reasonably white. Thank you! Aniela

Aniela – You are correct—there is more than one dentist that can identify the best treatment to restore your teeth. But those dentists have to be artistic cosmetic dentists, and there are very few of them.

Start your search by looking for a skilled cosmetic dentist. A dentist who has accreditation or extensive training in aesthetic or cosmetic dentistry can help. Look at dentists’ websites for awards that they have received. Ask how much continuing education and training the dentist participates in each year. Also look for his or smile gallery of before-and-after pictures.

We suggest that you schedule consultations with two or three cosmetic dentists. You won’t receive a full exam, but they will take a look at your teeth, answer your questions, and make recommendations. It is possible that bleaching your teeth isn’t the best way to treat the stains. Another cosmetic treatment, such as porcelain veneers may be recommended. A talented cosmetic dentist will be able to help!
