I need two of my upper teeth redone with dental implants. This dentist gave me the most affordable quote – the extraction, bone grafts, both dental implants, and crowns is around $10,000. After the extraction and bone graft, the dentist placed a Maryland Bridge at the implant site. I need to wear it for a few months while the site heals. While 10k is steep, I thought for the amount of work I was getting, it was a fair price.
However, I have had to get the Maryland Bridge replaced a few times in as many weeks. Is that normal? The dentist doing my implants is a general practitioner, not a cosmetic dentist. Is it too late to switch to a cosmetic dentist? Or would switching be my best option? I am worried, but don’t want to incur extra costs by switching.
Thank you for your help,
Julian, from West Virginia
Your concerns about switching dentists is valid. However, your dentist may be inexperienced in the techniques needed to do implant dentistry and make a Maryland Bridge. Cosmetic dentistry such as dental implants should be left to experienced cosmetic dentists, not to general dentists or novices. A general dentist may be affordable, but botched cosmetic work is very expensive to repair later on.
Luckily, you are at a good place in your treatment to stop and switch dentists. Dentists are under an ethical and moral obligation to assist you if you want to switch dentists. You can ask your dentist about affordable dental implant specialists in your area, and they should be able to refer you elsewhere.
Your only added cost will be a replacement temporary tooth, since your Maryland Bridge keeps breaking. Most cosmetic dentists prefer temporary dental flippers in lieu of a Maryland Bridge, which use metal. A Maryland Bridge is a false tooth attached to metal “wings”, which get bonded to the backs of the teeth adjacent to your missing one. The metal can be seen through your tooth’s natural transulence, so they are not very aesthetic. A cosmetic dentist will likely give you a more natural-looking temporary tooth.
