I know root canals hurt bad. So I’m looking for the best dentist to do it. It’s something that I will have to go through I know because my tooth is killing me. The dentist already told me it is infected. He said it will be fine but I really want to be knocked out for it and he doesn’t give patients anything to help them through the appointment. Can it be done at a hospital? – L.J.
L.J. – There is no need to go to a hospital to get a pain-free root canal treatment. There are a few things you can do to find the best dentist to treat your tooth.
A gentle dentist who uses sedation dentistry can make your root canal painless. You won’t even feel the numbing injection for local anesthesia at the extraction site.
When you receive a root canal with sedation, you won’t be unconscious as with general anesthesia, but you will be very drowsy. The purpose of sedation is to calm you and to make the experience painless. The next day, you probably won’t remember what happened during the appointment
Many dentists offer at least one of the following forms of sedation:
- Nitrous oxide – Also referred to as laughing gas, it’s safe, odorless, and colorless. The dentist will reverse the effects by giving you pure oxygen to breath in.
- Oral conscious sedation – You’ll be given anti-anxiety medication to take before the appointment. This level will make you drowsy, so you’ll need transportation for your appointment.
Schedule Consultations to Find the Best Dentist
Since your dentist doesn’t offer sedation, you can consider scheduling consultations with at least two other dentists who do. Each dentist will explain the options for helping you relax. It will help you choose the best dentist for your root canal treatment.
