I lost one of my front teeth in an accident. After getting a removable false tooth, my dentist recommended a dental implant topped with a crown to replace it. He placed the post with no problems, but when he placed the crown, I was unhappy with it. It’s too white next to the rest of my teeth, and looks very unnatural. It’s permanently cemented in, so I’m not sure what can even be done at this point, but I’m very self conscious about it.
My dentist is willing to re-do the crown until he gets it right, but I’m wondering if I should go see a cosmetic dentist instead? The only reason I haven’t is because of cost. Should I have gone to a cosmetic dentist in the first place?

Painting a crown to match a natural tooth is a very difficult procedure. It takes a large amount of skill and will require multiple trips between the dentist and the laboratory making it, not to mention multiple appointments for try-ins. He should have had you try it in and see how it looks under different lighting before permanently cementing it.
Your dentist could have said you needed porcelain crowns on both teeth, as this is a shortcut to getting both teeth to be the same color. However, this denotes a lack of skill on the part of the dentist, so by not doing this, he is already trying to save you money.
If price is a factor, continue working with this dentist, as he seems committed to helping you. However, factor gas prices into your budget, as you will have to go back and forth many times before you get a matching crown. This is due to your dentist’s lack of experience with cosmetic dentistry. If you would like it done sooner and better, you can go to see an expert cosmetic dentist in your area. However, the cost of starting over may be too high for you.
If perfection is your end goal, you should seek a second opinion from an affordable cosmetic dentist in your area. If you are willing to sacrifice some time to save some money, continue to see your current dentist.
