I’ve had dentures for quite a long time. Right now I have severe bone loss. I wondered if it is still possible to get dentures that fit?
Thanks for your time,
Edith from New Jersey
Unfortunately, it will not be possible to find complete dentures that fit you well. Because of your bone loss there is no ridge on which the dentures can fit. You have a condition known as facial collapse. Your body absorbs the minerals in your jawbone after your teeth are removed.
The situation isn’t hopeless. What can help you is to get bone grafting done. That will put bone structure where you need it. After the bone grafting you could get dentures again, but you will end up in the exact same situation. My recommendation would be to get dental implants. With implants, a root form is placed into your jawbone and tricks your body into thinking you have a tooth root there and need the bone. With dental implants, you’ll also feel much more secure. There will be no more embarrassing denture slips in public.
